Selecting The Correct Size
The best rug doesn’t look good in and of itself – it enhances and compliments the entire look of your interior / exterior space.
With that, its interesting how the size of a rug and not just its appearance can influence the dynamic of an area.
1. Define Dimensions
First step would be to measure the dimensions of the space with the help of a scale or meauring tape. After which you identify the area you want to place your rug.
An important tip which generally gets over-looked – mind the doors and how they open.
2. Optical Illusions
Rugs have a way of making your area look unified or disconnected, you can call it an illusion of space. An undersized rug makes the room appear smaller and vague, hence without a doubt opt for a larger sized rug. A bigger rug tends to unify the furniture and accents in the area to make the room appear larger than it actually is.
3. 18” of the Floor
A thumb rule – keep atleast 18” of bare floor around the edges of a rug.
This almost works for all spaces. If the space is smaller, feel free to bend the rules to adjust to your needs. The key is to get the proportions in the space right.
4. Bend the Rules
If the room looks good – go for it!
Remember that these are standard rules for standard rooms. If you’ve got an unusual room structure or furniture placements, you’ll have to work with what looks best!
